The Strategic Knowledge Base is an online tool available to all civil society and nonprofit organizations at any time, free of charge, and without any restrictions. Originally created for the Hungarian nonprofit sector, it is a collection of tools and guides, a learning opportunity, a practical resource, and a source of inspiration for nonprofit professionals who are seeking assistance with the planning processes of their organization or new initiative.

In its entirety, the site can only be enjoyed in Hungarian, but we have translated a curated selection of tools and guides into English, which we think are essential for a nonprofit organization’s purposeful planning and sustainable operation. While this is in no way a comprehensive collection of knowledge you need to run an organization aimed at social or community change, it is a useful foundation that can be built upon. If you want to continue that process and learn more, let us know what else you would like to see translated!

These are the translated guides and tools so far that you can find at the bottom of the download page of the original website, where all knowledge is organized in a structured and straightforward way.

Professional strategy

The professional strategy is the organization’s most important guiding document. From identifying the (social) problem, need, or desire we aim to respond to, to the impact we want to achieve, this document lays the foundation of our work. Your professional strategy sets forth our organization’s vision, mission, values, strategic priorities, and goals. In addition, it provides an opportunity to analyze our broader context and to plan our work with various stakeholders.

Functional strategies

In order to successfully implement your professional strategy, you must be aware of the organizational – that is, operational – conditions that underlie everything. To analyze and plan for these, it is advisable to develop what we refer to as functional strategies. Well thought out and well-planned operational areas are essential for the effectiveness of the organization’s professional work and for achieving long-term impact.
